1. What type of programs do you offer at the speed center? Davis Speed Center offers a wide range of programs. Our most popular program is our speed & agility program. The speed programs focuses on helping athletes achieve greater athletic skills in speed development, footwork, agility, coordination, power, and core strength. We also offer our strength and conditioning program. This program is for those athletes who are looking for help with gaining muscle, strength, endurance, or weight loss.
2. How do I get started in a program? and how often should I come? The easiest way to get started in a speed & agility program is to call us and set up a free pretest evaluation. From there we can discuss your goals and needs as well as scheduling options. Typically we like to see athletes at least twice a week, but depending on your schedule and outside activities 3 times per week is optimal.
3. How much does it cost to train? Check our speed & agility program page for details on the speed program. Check out our strength training page for details on the strength program.
4. What makes Davis Speed Center different from other speed & agility camps? Davis Speed Center programs were developed with years of science, research, and results. Dave Davis who earned a degree in Exercise and Sports Science created the speed program our trainers use. Davis' experience working with professional, collegiate, and underclassman athletes has proven our results. Check out testimonials for proof. All of our trainers go through demanding training to become Davis Speed Center speed coach certified. Our programs and training comes from professional trainers who have studied the anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics of the human body in order to understand how to best coach and correct athletes skills. Our staff is not made up of former professional athletes trying to use their name to build credibility. Our staff are the ones who trained those professional athletes.
5. I've seen some of these speed camps offer running on treadmill, why don't you do that? The use of treadmills in sports performance programs has been widely debated. Some stated the treadmill running does not translate to the same mechanics the body used to run on ground. The main flaw of the running treadmills is that they do not work an athletes acceleration ability. Treadmill running has athletes hop on a treadmill that is already moving so there is no acceleration phase in it. The only thing that might improve is the top end speed. Since most sports require athletes to be able to accelerate and decelerate in rapid stop and go motions we train for that. Top speed training usually will only benefit 100 meter and 200 meter sprinters in track. Since most athletes will never have to reach top speed in their sport, we train them to start and stop fast. This training leads to a much greater training effect and speed increase than treadmill running can.
6. What age do you start training athletes at? Typically 9 years of age is the youngest we will start an athlete. It depends more on a child's ability to listen, learn, and apply what we teach. If we feel an athlete is not mentally mature enough to learn we will not train them. However if a child can listen, learn, and apply young ages are great to start them. The younger an athlete is when they learn proper running form and body mechanics the easier it will be for them to excel as they get older.
7. Is this mainly for male athletes or do females train too? Our program is for both males and females. Many of our female athletes can see great results with training. On top of that many drills we perform help to prevent ACL injuries which is a growing concern with the female athlete. Successfully learning how to have proper body mechanics and strength will go a long ways in preventing injuries.
8. When is the best time to go through a speed camp? If you are only going to train once in the year, the months leading up to your sports season are the best time to train. That way you can take all the progress you made straight into season. Many athletes feel like to train anytime they are out of season though. Just like lifting weights, the more you practice and train for speed, the faster you will become.
